Christmas at-a-glance

stmarysseal1000pxCHRISTMAS IS COMING!
There’s so much to tell you about, we’re making a two-part News post this time. First, today, is a list of all the services and entertainment events (so far), woven together and including those at rural Team Churches.
All the listings below can also be found compiled on a new Christmas 2016 at-a-glance page – or find it under the Events menu; please check it from time to time for any changes or additions.
If you’d prefer to see services and entertainments listed separately, visit these pages instead: Events and Services.
In a day or two’s time, we’ll put up a second News post, with the latest community news and other information.
Scroll right down for a contents list for this month’s wonderful as ever Parish Newsletter.
And lastly for now, by popular demand, the snow is back (on this website at least).
Many thanks to everyone who helped coordinate all of this edition’s information.

November updates + news

2013sealwreathNOVEMBER is a month of Remembrance and also a transition into the Christmas period.
There are several special services later this month, including Remembrance Services in Totnes and Bridgetown on Sunday 13th November (preceded in Totnes by the usual parades and an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial.
On the same morning, Wild Church offers a Wild Remembrance outdoor pilgrimage on the Dartington Estate.
The next Charity Sunday is on 27th November at St John’s Church, Bridgetown, this time in aid of the Drop In Centre and including a speech from Mark Hatch; note there won’t be the usual 11.15am service in Totnes on that day.
There is no Choral Evensong in November – there is however the Advent Carol Service on Sunday 27th November (at 6.30pm). On Wednesday 30th November, there’s a Rowcroft & Allwood Light Up A Life service at 7pm.
Christmas is coming and our Events listings are beginning to look a bit festive. We are compiling the various Christmastime services and events (please let us have details if you haven’t already done so!); we’ll then create a special Christmas-at-a-glance page covering everything from the end of this month and into the beginnings of 2017.
As the temperatures drop, the Totnes Drop In Centre always starts getting busy at this time of year. There’s a mini-feature below on the Drop In and Night Shelter, including their latest newsletter, a thankyou and a continuing appeal for donations of bedding.
Totnes Street Pastors have also just published their Autumn Newsletter, again see below to read or download it.
More thankyous are awarded to those who work behind the scenes – cleaning, polishing, arranging and providing flowers and so on – all of which help make St Mary’s (and the other Team Churches too) look their best for congregations and visitors.
There’s a further mini-feature on Network of Wellbeing, who are the driving force behind several innovative community projects.
Liz Waterson‘s Community News section also includes this time the latest dates for groups and meetings – plus details and memos about the myriad other things you can join in with, help with, or find out about.
Rounding off this news post (keep scrolling down) there’s a contents list for the November Parish Newsletter, along with a link to download it or read it. Producing, printing and distributing the Newsletter does incur costs, so – even if you always read it online – donations / contributions are being sought and will be gratefully received.
• Many thanks as always to everyone who has sent us information and images.

NIght Shelter News
portacabinthankyoucard
(click the image to enlarge it)
Once planning is complete and we start to look to buy the portacabin, I’ll write a fuller article about it all, so much has happened since all this started and we are still trying to get the Flood Risk Assessment finally approved -I hope to be meeting with the Environment Agency this week.
As wheels grind rather slowly, it is a good thing that the Drop In has not been demolished (as it was scheduled to be) because at this rate we wouldn’t have anywhere for a Night Shelter to go.
We have had the Drop In thoroughly deep cleaned so that it is as heathy as the current building could be, but even before demolition we are hoping to move Mark to much better temporary premises and the portacabin will be needed (among other things) as an office.
Although the new premises (opposite the Drop In) are rather warmer and much more inviting, there is no private space for Mark, private interviews or the work of professionals who come to work with his service users during the week. As the portacabin will be situated directly behind the building to which Mark is relocating, this will be the perfect solution. ~ Liz

sleepingbagclipartBedding for the Drop In Centre
Many, many thanks to everyone who has given me duvets and blankets for the Drop In Centre. Mark is preparing now for the Winter Emergency Night Shelter and along with this, we have provided duvets for those in need. In all I have given out 15 duvets. Currently, I still have plenty of blankets and some bed linen, but the duvet stock is now very low.
If you have any spare duvets (single and double) please pop them in my porch and I will store them for Mark until he calls for them. It would be really helpful if you could put a label on the bag to say whether the duvet is single or double.

shareshop2Totnes Share Shop
Here at the Network of Wellbeing, we have been seeding a Share Shop in Totnes. The great news is we now have a venue thanks to Totnes Town Council and a grant to support us thanks to the Big Lottery Fund. The council have granted us a space to pilot the Share Shop in The Guild Hall garage on Guild Hall Yard.
The Share Shop would enable local people to borrow all sorts of useful things at nominal cost so that they don’t have to buy them for themselves. The aim is to encourage the sharing economy, to help people connect more, spend less, consume less, and waste less. (Photo just for illustration – the Totnes Share Shop isn’t yet in place!)

Totnes Food Bank logoFood Bank Items
Please check the sell by dates on food bank items.
I have to go through all the gifts and remove those that are out of date, empty the cans and then recycle – rather messy work. Any out of date food sent to the Food Bank which has to be disposed of by them has to be paid for. Also, very sadly, we are unable to give homemade gifts as there is provenance or dating. This is not problem at our fairs or coffee mornings, because purchaser and seller deal directly with one another. Any gifts, if you are unable to leave them in St Mary’s Church, may be left at any time in my porch. I am also collecting duvets and blankets and clothes for Mark, who will be opening the Drop In as a night shelter this winter.
