ST JOHN’S CHURCH is part of the Totnes Mission Community, and is served by a team of clergy and the two churchwardens of the Totnes with Bridgetown PCC.
When in our own building, we have a Eucharist Service (Common Worship Order One) each Sunday at 9.30am. Everyone and anyone is very welcome to come and join us! St John’s is a relaxed and informal congregation. Check current service times here.
We have a Children’s Area and are always overjoyed to welcome new people and new families to our services. Following our services, we have light refreshments to help people to get to know each other better.
Additional to Divine Worship, we host an interactive church service, which we have called The Conversation. The meeting is framed with prayer and song, around an open discussion about a topical issue. Our next service, at 6.30pm on Sunday 9th September, is themed ‘Is there Absolute Truth?’.
These services are specifically aimed at those who are not currently attending church, but who have questions about Christianity that they would like to discuss. During our building work, this service currently takes place at Totnes Boating Association, Steamer Quay Road, Bridgetown.
Parent and Toddler Group
Each Monday morning during term time, St John’s also runs a Parent and Toddler Group, to support and encourage local parents. The group attracts a wide range of parents, carers and children. The group is all about providing support and friendship. We sometimes have a bouncy castle, and we have even taken a trip to the zoo! The group currently meets between 10am and 12noon, at Totnes Boating Association.
St John’s Community Café
Every Wednesday, between 10am and 12noon, we also run the highly successful St John’s Community Café. This donation-based café exists to create a weekly safe and relaxing place for local residents to find friendship, company and support.
A video of Bishop Robert’s visit to the Café in early 2018:
The Café has been highly praised by the local MP Sarah Wollaston, the Bishop of Exeter (see video above) and the Totnes Town Council. The Town Mayor often has a resident’s surgery at the Café.
We have wonderful coffee, great cake and a welcome which is second-to-none. Over the past year we have seen people of all ages coming to the Café to build friendships and local support networks.
• at the moment, the Community Café is meeting at Totnes Boating Association
• you can find out more about the Café on Facebook
St John’s has also been hosting a monthly Messy Church, which has been a really successful method of connecting with young families in our area.
• Messy Church is currently taking a break, while the St John’s redevelopment work is undertaken
An established bimonthly initiative at St John’s Church with the opportunity for alternative and creative worship. This may particularly suit anyone who finds they do not relate to conventional, traditional forms of worship but who is looking for different ways to encounter God and to respond to a sense of the Holy.
