ABOUT MESSY CHURCH [see also the Messy Church photo albums]
MESSY CHURCH is a non-denominational world-wide organisation designed for children. Totnes Messy Church is a free event held on the third Saturday of the month at St John’s Church, Bridgetown, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
[Scroll down for a list of upcoming Messy Church dates.]
The children come from quite a wide area including Totnes, Dartington, Broadhempston, Berry Pomeroy and beyond. St John’s and Berry Pomeroy Primary schools are very supportive to Messy Church.
The events are for Primary school children with their parents / carers / grandparents. Their younger or older siblings are very welcome. We are hoping that some of the older children may like to join as helpers. We host the crafts and teas upstairs in the big hall; there is a baby corner with toys for the younger children to enjoy and a prayer corner for the adults and children to use.
The programme starts with about one hour of craft activities based around the theme for the day. (Usually there are about 6 to 8 choices of things to do.)
Then everyone goes down to the Church, where there is a short service of about twenty minutes, with music and screens depicting pictures about the theme. This act of worship is led by Revd. John Luscombe, Tony Gregg or Carolyn Stilwell.
We then all go upstairs to have tea together. This may consist of something cooked or sandwiches. Sausages and baked beans, pasta and sauce or sandwiches followed by cakes seem very popular. The cakes are donated by parishioners from Berry Pomeroy, St Mary’s Church and St John’s Church. The parents, children and helpers all sit down to the meal and have a good chat.
