Sunday 9th December at 2pm
starts from St Mary’s Church, Dartington
Wild Church Pilgrimage
SACRED WATERS, SPRINGS & WELLS
As our 2018 series of pilgrimages inspired by ‘Sacred Waters, Wells and Springs’ draws to a close, Wild Church is delighted to collaborate with Roots into Reverence. Wild Church will take a break from its regularly monthly events in 2019, so do come along to join us in celebrating four years of wonder-filled pilgrimages in this special concluding gathering.
Roots into Reverence guides days of pilgrimage and evenings of contemplation and music which explore and pay reverence to our inner and outer landscapes. We take inspiration from the tradition of religious pilgrimage and the Buddhist practice of walking meditation. The route we take is circular. We begin and end at a holy place, on the land and in ourselves.

For the Wild Church Advent Pilgrimage, we begin at the beautiful church of St. Mary’s Dartington, walk to the ancient yew at the heart of the Dartington Estate and then along and across the River Dart to the yews in Staverton churchyard, where we will share a silent, interspiritual communion. We walk together as a group, sometimes in silence, sometimes talking and sometimes in song. We walk to pay reverence to ourselves, each other, the land and the spirit of pilgrims who have gone before and those who will follow in our footsteps.
In this special Advent pilgrimage in relation to the River Dart and Dartington, we will walk to honour the full cycle of life, both the light and the dark, as the last light of the solar year fades into darkness.
When we return to St Mary’s, we end our day together by filling the church with candlelight and music. As the musicians play we invite you to play in this sacred place, bringing the fullness of your being to the moment in movement, stillness, song or silence.  The walks are led by Beth Thomas and Jess Stein with music from musicians Joe Holtaway and Michiel de Koning.
If you can’t manage the full pilgrimage, please feel welcome to come along at 5pm and join us simply for this concluding celebration – wrap up very warm and bring a blanket and / or a hottie!
For the walk, please wear lots of warm layers and come prepared to both walk and be still in all weathers. We recommend sturdy, mud friendly footwear, waterproofs and that you bring a warm drink and snacks. On our return walk, we will be walking into the literal darkness, so you may also wish to bring a lantern or torch.

Duo Dorado
A CELEBRATION of BACH
Some glorious music from the composer described in his day as ‘the Miracle of Leipzig’, From violin sonatas with basso continuo to solos for each instrument, this wide-ranging programme includes the great Sonata in A major for violin and keyboard, the beautiful G major Basso Continuo Sonata, and a highlight from The Art of Fugue.
We are thrilled to bring Hazel Brooks (baroque violin) and David Pollock (harpsichord) back to TEMS after a ten year gap. They have performed extensively in the UK and beyond, and their current project exploring 17th century English repertoire has led to some ground-breaking recordings, the latest being The Unknown Purcell for Chandos.

THE TELLING
Vision: The Imagined Testimony of Hildegard von Bingen
The Telling features Clare Norburn (soprano / director), Ariane Prussner (mezzo soprano), Leah Stuttard (harp) plus an actress to be confirmed. Lighting design is by Natalie Rowland and Pitch Black Lighting. This exciting multimedia experience of light, song, music and storytelling is an atmospheric candlelit show with an imagined narrative by the extraordinary Hildegard of Bingen (1098 – 1179) as she looks back at her life, alongside performance of her mesmeric chant.

Watch a video:

The show gives an insight into the painful visionary experiences Hildegard suffered throughout her life
, covering some of the core emotional moments in her life.
It is “an imagined testimony” as Hildegard lies on her deathbed, revisiting and re-experiencing meaningful episodes from her past, including the moment when she was taken from her family at the age of 8 and when she made the decision at the age of 42 to finally talk about and write down her visions.

Syrinx
BLAST FROM THE PAST
From the 14th to the 18th century, wind music could be heard everywhere from grand state occasions to the humblest village dance. Syrinx aim to recreate this impressive tradition playing bagpipes, shawms, dulcians, deutsche schalmei, baroque oboes and bassoon: their repertoire covers the rise of the professional wind band, with music from early anonymous masters, Dufay and Morley through to Handel and Telemann.
Syrinx received acclaim for their first album, The Saxon Alternative. Members play with leading period orchestras including the Academy of Ancient Music, The OAE, and the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, and in ensembles such as I Fagiolini, Mediva, Blondel and Concentus VII.
