Wednesday 25th July at 7.30 pm
St Mary’s Church, Totnes
CONCERT
by the Posaunenchor St Michaelis – the brass ensemble of the Church of St Michael, Hamburg. The ensemble regularly plays in concerts and church services, and covers a wide range of music.
Many brass ensembles began to form in Germany towards the end of the 19th century, often manned by young members of the predecessor of the YMCA.
It was in that time that the brass ensemble of Hamburg’s main church, Saint Michaelis (‘Michel’ in short) was founded on January 6th, 1901. Its history and  development – especially during the first 50 years – has been influenced by events and circumstances of those times. In spite of the many miseries and the confusion of those years, the Michel Brass Ensemble dedicated its endeavours firmly to church music. For more than 110 years – without interruption – it has been representing and supporting the congregation of The Church of St. Michaelis, playing regularly at services and concerts.
Josef Thöne has been its musical director since 1995. Under his leadership the musicians have widened their repertoire as far as musical styles, genres and periods are concerned. They present themselves with enhanced musical aplomb and versatility. In recent years Josef has taken ‘his band’ on several concert tours abroad to Andalusia, Brazil and now also to England.
