ST MARY’S CHURCH has a long tradition of good choral music, and the current St Mary’s Choir works hard to maintain this high standard as it leads the congregational singing, providing appropriate anthems according to the time of the Church year.
The Choir has a wide repertoire and this is exercised particularly when they are required to sing at a variety of special services – for example, weddings, memorial services, civic services and pet services.
In recent times, it has been necessary to hold services which involve the whole Totnes Team, and on these occasions the St Mary’s Choir looks to join with choir members and musicians from other churches in the Team, to make one united musical offering for the occasion.
On the third Sunday of each month (except August), the Choir are joined by friends from Bovey Tracey, Ermington, Stoke Gabriel and Teignmouth, to sing Choral Evensong. These services are very popular and well attended. The average size of the Choir on these occasions is 28 singers and accompaniment, and a concluding voluntary is provided by a very proficient organist.
The Choral Evensong Choir was invited to perform part of a selected choir in Exeter Cathedral on 29 June 2013, to sing at Bishop Michael’s Farewell Service (review below).
Parish Church Choir chosen to sing at Bishop’s Farewell
The Choral Evensong Choir of St Mary’s Church , Totnes, was one of only four choirs in the Exeter Diocese who were chosen to sing, together with the St Peter’s Singers of Exeter Cathedral, at Bishop Michael’s Farewell Service at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 29 June, 2013.
In front of a packed congregation, the choir sang music ranging from 16th Century composers such as Gabrieli, to part of an African Mass, accompanied by organ and the Cathedral Brass Ensemble.
Janet Dietz, Director of Music at St Mary’s, Totnes, says:
It is a great honour for the Choir to have been asked to sing at this service, and we all worked hard to ensure that we were worthy of our invitation..
It was a very memorable day, and outr efforts have been rewarded by my receiving a further invitation to take the choir to provide the music for a Choral Evensong at some future date.
The Choral Evensong Choir comes together to sing Choral Evensong in St Mary’s Church at 6.30pm every third Sunday in the month (except August), and prepares special music for festival services such as Harvest, Advent, Christmas and Easter.
At the centre of it are the loyal and committed members of the St MAry’s Parish Church Choir, who work continuously to provide and maintain a high standard of inspirational music, to support and enhance the worship at St MAry’s every week.
The singers who join with the Parish Choir to sing Choral Evensong are friends who are also very active in their own parish churches at Bovey Tracey, Ermington, Stoke Gabriel and Teignmouth.
