mid-May news + updates

stmaryssealgravatar

AS YOU’LL SEE BELOW, Reverend Julian C Ould was recently installed as a Prebendary – congratulations to him and to Reverend Cate Edmonds, too, who was also installed at the same time.
Upcoming events this month include (on 23rd May) the launching of Beetroot, an innovative lunchtime food project which includes the opportunity to be part of some audio story-making. Try to get along to help this – the first of a series of lunches – get off to a BIG start! (You can help even more by printing and displaying the downloadable poster.)
Also new is a chance for the over-60s to take a free ‘Fitness MOT‘, see 25th May at St John’s. Towards the end of this month there is of course the Party in the Town, which includes several events at St Mary’s Church, Totnes…there’s a summary below, and a fuller listing on the Events page.
A reminder that you can come along and help commemorate 10 years of service for Julian and likewise for Liz  on 29th May at St Mary’s Church, Berry Pomeroy, after the 10.30am Team Service.
IN EARLY JUNE there’s a newly-added music event, Elgar Chorale will be providing songs from ‘Elgar, Shakespeare and Merrie England’. And look out for several more new additions throughout June and July.
Scroll right down for Liz Waterson’s Community News: there are several important news items plus a chance to read the latest Totnes Street Pastors newsletter.
Many thanks as always to everyone who has sent us information and images!

TWO NEW PREBENDARIES at Exeter Cathedral

prebendaries

BISHOP ROBERT installed two new Prebendaries at Exeter Cathedral earlier this month. They are Reverend Cate Edmonds, vicar of Escot, Feniton & Payhembury and Exeter Diocesan Adviser for Education Chaplaincy and Reverend Julian Ould, Team Rector of the Totnes Mission Community.
Prebendaries are members of the College of Canons of the Cathedral, with their own stall in the quire.  This means that they provide advice to the Cathedral when consulted and have to formally approve the appointment of a new Diocesan Bishop.
Traditionally, a Prebend was provided an annual income to supplement that derived from the parochial income. Today, with stipends standardised, each new Prebendary is presented with a loaf of bread to symbolise this ancient entitlement.

PARTY IN THE TOWN
partytownslider3-1024x576Party in the Town springs out of Dartington International Summer School & Festival as part of the new year-round Arts programme at Dartington; we hope it will become an annual event. This year more than 400 performers are taking part, in over 25 venues.
Party in the Town takes over central venues and public spaces on the Friday of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the fantastic musical talent of Totnes and the surrounding area. Catch chamber ensembles, jazz acts, choirs, folk singers, street performers, rock bands, electronica and more throughout the evening.
The Party opens with a special schools commission in St Mary’s Church at 6pm, led by the charismatic Brazilian percussionist and composer Adriano Adewale – there are more events at St Mary’s during the evening*.
The town’s headline act is British jazz royalty Courtney Pine and his band; their House of Legends show is at the Civic Hall at 9.30pm
