news + updates for May and beyond

stmaryssealgravatar

A COUPLE OF EVENTS recently added for May are part of Open Arms Week (fundraising & celebrating welcome for refugees); scroll down for a little more about that. Towards the end of the month there’s the Party in the Town, which includes events at St Mary’s Church, Totnes…we’ll do a fuller feature about that in a News post later this month. Rounding off all this Maytime bustle is a chance to indulge, perhaps, in some reminiscing – to commemorate 10 years of service for Julian and likewise for Liz you are invited to help them celebrate on 29th May (date & venue changed) at St Mary’s Church, Berry Pomeroy, after the 10.30am Team Service. THE MONTH OF JUNE, TOO, is filling up with things to do: diary-jotters can add a pair of unique events presented by Friends of St Mary’s, both of which are in aid of the stained glass window restoration project – a Floral Tribute celebrating The Queen’s 90th birthday (with ‘Vintage Afternoon Tea’)…plus A Morning with Ann Widdecombe, when you can hear her tell of her colourful life and experiences. Scroll right down for Liz Waterson’s Community News, including Copland Meadows opening their garden gate to visitors, feedback from fundraisers, help needed for Christian Aid Week – and a chance of a WWI tour of Bruges, Arras & Lille. If you want even more to read, the May edition of the Parish Newsletter is now online; scroll right down this post for the contents list. Many thanks as always to everyone who has sent us information and images!

PARTY IN THE TOWN
partytownslider3-1024x576Party in the Town springs out of Dartington International Summer School & Festival as part of the new year-round Arts programme at Dartington; we hope it will become an annual event. This year more than 400 performers are taking part, in over 25 venues.
Party in the Town takes over central venues and public spaces on the Friday of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the fantastic musical talent of Totnes and the surrounding area. Catch chamber ensembles, jazz acts, choirs, folk singers, street performers, rock bands, electronica and more throughout the evening.
The Party opens with a special schools commission in St Mary’s Church at 6pm, led by the charismatic Brazilian percussionist and composer Adriano Adewale – there are more events at St Mary’s during the evening*.
The town’s headline act is British jazz royalty Courtney Pine and his band; their House of Legends show is at the Civic Hall at 9.30pm
