mid-April news & updates

THERE IS choral music on Saturday 23rd April, with a coffee concert by Cameo at St Mary’s, celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary.
There are also several new events listed further down, for May and beyond, for those of you who like to fill your diaries early with things to look forwards to.
Prayer is another theme for this post – a Day of Prayer for the Police in early May, followed a few days later by a whole Week of Prayer, the latter in response to a call by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
Keeping the information side of the website up to date, please see the new listings for Reverend Jane and Richard Frost.
Liz Waterson’s Community News section includes, amongst many other things, a couple of items from Pastor Mark Hatch, a downloadable Traidcraft price list, follow-up information about Fire Safety in the Home, plus news of a generous donation from Friend’s of St Mary’s which paid for the restoration of a damaged window in St Mary’s.

I am married to Richard and we have a daughter, Rachel, a son, Jonathan, and a cocker spaniel, Pip! We celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary in 2016.
Before training for the ministry in the South West Ministry Training Course, I was a secondary school English teacher and, latterly, spent 6 years as a lay school chaplain, out of which, came my vocation.
Gardening, singing and reading have been spare time creative outlets to date.
A cradle Anglican, I have worshipped in a range of churches: I am particularly energised by journeying alongside others and relish all things creative and reflective. Joining the Totnes Team is a training gift.E

I have been a Reader in the Exeter Diocese since 2003 and am also a probationer Oblate at the Benedictine Monastery at Alton Abbey in Hampshire.
I work four days a week for the NHS supporting people for whom mental ill health affects their ability to work (Fridays are day off for both Jane and me!).
I also lead an international initiative, Mindful Employer, providing businesses and organisations with support, information and training and gained an MSc in this area of work in 2012.
I am primarily involved at Dartington and Brooking Churches and in Sacred Space. Jane and I are really enjoying living at The Vicarage in Week.

markhatchMessage from Pastor Mark Hatch
Dear All
I left for Kenya on Monday to visit the mission work that we have established in Kenya over many years. I recently put out a request for some funding towards buying a plot of land and establishing a church in a slum area of Eldoret called Manyaka.
With your kindness the funds came in and I go to finish and oversee the purchase of the plot of land and to build a temporary church building to be used for many different purposes in this poor community.
I am so grateful to everyone who supported this appeal, your kindness will truly be a blessing to this slum area.
I will return and share an update with photos.
God bless all of you for you support and prayers,
Pastor Mark Hatch

traidcraft01Traidcraft Price List
Following on from our feature on Traidcraft in the last News post, here’s a message from Viv Elce
Dear supporters,
Just to let you know that there is a lovely new catalogue out for Traidcraft, with some great summery things and all the usual food PLUS some more grocery lines. Traidcraft has by far the biggest selection of fairly traded goods.
I’m asking you to especially consider how you can boost sales as Traidcraft has for the last 4 years made a LOSS – please tell your friends how buying from Traidcraft is better than buying ordinary Fairtrade (good as that is) – ask me if you don’t know yourself!
I would also ask you to consider each buying an extra item from me – I am happy to refund you for anything you try and don’t like. My sales have gone down in the last few months so I am constantly looking for ways to sell more.
EVERY PURCHASE BENEFITS THE POOR and provides employment, dignity and purpose.
Traidcraft also actively campaigns against unfair trading practices all over the world.
With best wishes,
Viv Elce (Totnes United Free Church)

friendsofstmarysshop_07Friends of St Mary’s donation
The Friends of St Mary’s have donated £3,500 toward the restoration of the Paige Adams window in St Mary’s Church.
This was recently damaged by vandals, necessitating the replacement of an entire panel of stained glass. The window was donated around 1900 by Mr Paige Adams in memory of his parents.
The Friends have maintained and beautified this lovely building in countless ways thanks to their tireless fundraising and church shop. As the building increasingly suffers the ravages of time, help with this vitally important work is needed more than ever, from our wider readership as well as from regular churchgoers.
St Mary’s, Totnes is one of the finest Churches in Devon and is undoubtedly Totnes’s most important ancient building, welcoming around a thousand visitors every week.
With a full programme of concerts and other events arranged for this year, there are all sorts of ways in which you can contribute. For example, baking cakes, serving refreshments, organising events, or simply becoming members for as little as £10 per year.
